Pawn (Blackcoat Rebellion #1)

Pawn - Aimee Carter

Are you more than the number on the back of your neck?

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister’s niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There’s only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered. The same one that got her killed…and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that’s not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she’s only beginning to understand.

"Even if we'd never met, even if you never existed, I would still love you beyond all reason for the rest of my life."

Wow what an amazing gripping book. I didn't quite know what to expect from Pawn. I have read Aimee's Goddess Test series and really enjoyed it but didn't know what to think about her writing a dystopia. I love dystopia so automatically wanted to read it but after sure a huge surge of dystopia novels in the recent years I was unsure how it would compete with those phenomenal novels out there. Aimee Carter's dystopia world is possibly one of the most addictive and unique that I have ever read. Pawn had everything you could have ever wanted in a YA Dystopia novel. I am incredibly impressed.

Aimee's writing style is so fluid that you just find yourself getting completely lost in her story and her world. I soon found myself completely emerged in this story and so invested that I just couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I was completely enthralled by this unique and compelling world that I just couldn't stop reading. Aimee has done such a fantastic job of joining the dystopia and I hope she cotinues to write dystopia novels because this one was fantastic.

One thing Aimee is fantastic at is character development. No matter which book by her I read I always love the characters. Kitty is one of the best heroines ever. She goes through so much of a journey throughout the book. From the poor orphan to one of the most powerful players in this war she grows in her confidence, in her kick-assery (is that a word? it is now!) and just in herself. She decides who she is and what she will do and you really root for her all the way through.

Benjy and Knox make up the two extra pieces in our love triangle and I genuinelly love both of them, which is extremely rare for me. Benjy is just super sweet and completely in love with Kitty and you just end up loving how cute they are together. Enter Knox. Knox is the bad boy but all he wants is to make sure that Kitty is safe and I adore that about him. They are seriously so many awesome characters in this book you can't possibly choose a favourite.

Pawn was a fantastic, addictive story set in a scarily realistic dystopia future. You really look at this future and you can completely see this happening and see the links between now-society and that extreme dystopic society. I was completely taken away into this world and many times I couldn't turn the pages fast enough because I just had to know what was going to happen.

This is a fantastic start to what is bound to be a heart-stopping, spell-binding series. It completely stole my heart and took my breath away. I loved every single second of it and I am left wanting more. I can't wait for the second book in this series to see what was going to happen. Considering I wasn't sure how much I would like Pawn I am completely taken away with this society, the story and the characters and it is definitely one of my favourite reads of the year. It was utterly phenomenal and for sure one of my favourite dystopian series. A must-read.

"If you protect your pawns and they reach the other side of the board, do you know what happens then? Your pawn becomes a queen. Because they kept moving forward and triumphed against impossible odds, they became the most powerful piece in the game. Never forget that, all right? Never forget the potential one solitary pawn has to change the entire game."
